Value more confidence and efficiency of the leader
How do Americans define good leadership? What is the "secret"? A recent survey found confidence and efficiency of the leader are the two most important characteristics that people value.
The results of a survey of 2009 on leadership in the U.S. found that over two thirds (69%) of Americans agree or strongly agree that there is a leadership crisis. This number is lower than in 2008.
Moreover, only 41% agree or strongly agree that leaders are effective and are doing a good job. This is an improvement (16%) over last year's results.
Perhaps most encouraging is that now the double of Americans think the country is going in a positive direction (33%) compared with 2007 when only 14% thought so.
The "National Leadership Index" found that 87% expressed confidence in the potential of effective leadership to solve problems. In other words, Americans still believe in the power of leadership.
With respect to the declining confidence in leaders, Wall Street and the media are in the worst situation. People are suspicious of financiers, journalists and news analysts. Fewer than one in five Americans (17%) believe that the media is working for the good of society. 50% believe that the media held in favor of a small group of special interests. Many question the objectivity and reliability of the information they receive.
Confidence in what leaders say, tops the list as one of the qualities most associated with effective leadership. Have confidence in the good intentions and integrity of the behavior of a leader is key. People need to believe that it is not ego or personal financial gain what is driving the leader, but rather a genuine interest in the welfare of others.
But good intentions are not enough. People also need to feel that their leaders are responsible for implementing and fulfilling their mandates. The study results suggest that Americans value the ability of a leader to produce results and its ability to keep in touch with public needs and concerns.
